To the uneducated, the name 12 Stone
Toddler suggests a heavy metal/rock band with a grotesquely obese
three-year-old as their logo, but on closer inspection 12 Stone Toddler are much
more radio and visually friendly.
Their new double A side, Batten Down the
Hatches/Broken Hearts & Battle Scars is a delectable treat for even the
most fussy of musical palettes. Batten Down the Hatches is reminiscent of early
tracks by The Hoosiers – lively, unique and somewhat surreal. Taken from the
new album Scheming, 12 Stone Toddler encapsulate a carnival atmosphere in just
under three minutes, whilst lyrically discussing a battle cry on a boat – we told
you it was surreal!
The second song on the single, Broken
Hearts & Battle Scars, has a slightly more chilled and relaxed opening, and
what follows is an 80’s style Maroon 5-esque melody. Perhaps not quite as
catchy as Batten Down the Hatches, but nevertheless the track will stick in
your head for days on end.
For those who have yet to come across 12
Stone Toddler this double A side is sure to win you over, and with the new
album just around the corner, what perfect timing.
