IF YOU haven’t heard any of Japanese Voyeurs' back catalogue, the name of their debut EP, Sicking and Creaming, is enough to put anyone off.
But you’d be wrong not to give them a chance. Double ‘A’ side That Love Sound/Blush, released on Slimeball Records, shows that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
The first surprise comes during That Love Sound, in the form of
Romily Alice’s vocals. A mixture of sweet, sour and pure edginess,
Alice’s voice is reminiscent of a young Shirley Manson – Garbage's front woman.
Johnny Seymour’s guitar provides a subtle background to Alice’s
vocals before the rest of the band launch into a grungy, rhythmic
chorus.
Returning to a subtle riff for the second chorus, the swapping of
musical parts helps give the track a truly three-dimensional feel,
whilst still feeling well connected.
Moving on to Blush, until about one minute into the song, it feels a
bit like a feedback fest, the kind of music you’d expect in a film
based in an abandoned warehouse.
Keeping with the film theme, when the guitar makes a full debut, the
song turns very action/adventure before a small breakdown which allows
the drums their time to shine.
A Lamb-of-God-meets-Rage-Against-the-Machine style solo ensues, before the song draws to a close.
Though these might not be the tracks to launch Japanese Voyeurs into
the spotlight, they definitely demonstrate the fact that this is a band
with huge potential. With a nudge in the right direction, they will be
gracing the bigger stages of Download and Sonisphere in no time.
That Love Sound/Blush is due for release 08 February, but if you
can’t wait that long, Japanese Voyeurs are giving away a free download
