A weeny bit disappointing
Artist: Bowling For Soup
Title: My Wena
Label: JIVE records

Bowling For Soup's new single, My Wena

THEY say you should never judge a book by it's cover, and I suppose the saying should extend to CD cover art. If it doesn't, you might find yourself somewhat "turned off" when you see the cover of Bowling For Soup's latest release, My Wena.

Due out on 28 September, My Wena is described as a hilarious love song, with all the elements of a Bowling For Soup song - the harmonies, the riff, the humour and the instantly recognisable vocals of Jaret Reddick. Wena is the name of the protagonist's girlfriend, and rather predictably 2 minutes and 50 seconds of double entendres follow.

It's a shame because My Wena should be the kind of comedy song that these punk rockers can pull off, but unfortunately the legends haven't quite got it right here. The resemblance to some other Bowling For Soup makes this song somewhat likeable, but even the most hardcore fans could easily be put off by how childish the lyrics are.

With a little more time and thought, the efforts of Chris Burney, Erik Chandler and Gary Wiseman could have been accompanied by equally impressive lyrics from Jaret.

Worryingly, this is the first track of the My Wena EP, which suggests more, equally disappointing tracks may ensue. As a big fan of the four-piece myself, I can only hope this is a blip on Bowling For Soup's overwise impressive discography, and it will be buried by the quality of their forthcoming studio album, Sorry For Partyin'.
